The evolution of Parrot Earth…

Written By: B.D. Butler - Apr• 03•12

When things begin to change, and progress, you eventually start to reflect back on where you started. Hopefully taking things that you learned along the way during your journey and committing them to memory. It’s about this time, I start to think back to when I bought Dexter, and how panic-stricken I was. I wanted to do the best that I could, and be a great parrot owner, by researching the hell out of anything that I could find on the internet or in the books I ordered online. Little did I know that bringing Dexter into my life would improve his life, and it would forever change mine.

I started a small blog on e-blogger, called More Than a Bird Brain, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I just wanted to document what I was doing, have someone read it, and maybe help someone not make the same mistakes I made along the way. So I just plugged away on the keyboard, and looking back, some posts were just for the sake of writing. Others had a glimmer of some passion and shooshe, that I had been searching for in my writing.

You live, you learn, right? I realized during this journey that my very passion was companion birds, and their training, diets, etc. I just couldn’t get enough, and it reminded me of yet another thing I was talked out of doing when I was younger. I wanted to go into several forms of animal training, and advocacy, but it wasn’t practical, “get a real job” was usually in there somewhere. So I deviated from my path, and went other places.

I just got a card from a dear friend that says, “do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and make a trail”. Insert Parrot Earth, and take a deep breath. As some of you know that I was inspired by another parrot blog, and author Patricia Sund to start writing again. You see I was quite the author when I was a child, and I wrote stories that happen to be beyond my years. Thankfully my mother kept some of those stories, and I got to bring them home with me. It reconnected me to my inner voice, and ability to put my thoughts out on a page, and invoke some emotion in the reader.

Insert Parrot Earth. PE was originally conceptualized from the idea of it being just a parrot’s world, and after all, we are all just living in it. I decided that when I got a domain name, and hosting that eventually it was going to progress and metamorphosize into something bigger than just the blog that I am so passionate about writing. I wanted PE to be a landing and destination point for people like me, who had adopted a bird, or bought a bird, and wanted to do the research, giving their companion the best quality of life. Parrot Earth should be a light in the abyss that can be the “wonderful” thing called the internet, because there is a lot of information out there, and it’s truly hard to filter out what is the good and the bad. Parrot Earth will just be that place that takes out a little of the leg room.

So that brings us to the changes that is happening with Parrot Earth. Parrot Earth is going (soon) to be launched as a website with product reviews, book reports, shopping, basic information, causes and organizations, merchandising, training and demonstration videos, and a link to the PE blog that started it all. I am truly excited for this new endeavor, and the fact that I have the ability to do so.

On a personal note, I will be taking several avian education courses, during the relaunch of PE, all while getting my veterinary technician certification. Yep, I’m going to be busy and loving every minute of it!

So, here’s to the readers that have followed and supported Parrot Earth, and to the readers that will discover Parrot Earth during your journey into the amazing world of aviculture, without you, I wouldn’t have found my “calling“…

Eric, thank you for dealing with my “bird brain” and supporting my dreams, and to Dexter, for making me the owner of one of the most amazing creatures I have ever met and to Cooper for being just the opposite of what I expected you to be and giving me a challenge.
