Crazy Bird Person?

Written By: B.D. Butler - Jul• 31•11

Do I consider myself a bird person, yes I do. I have met some amazing people along my travels that are very much “animal” people. However I will say that there is something about the connection of someone who is also into aviculture. I almost think that it’s because it is such a rare occasion to find someone who is as into parrots, well as you are.

I stumbled across this, and I had to tune in. I have to say that the jury is out officially on this show, until I can make some personal determinations. It was interesting how I was planning on writing a post about the topic of how society regards bird folk, and poof there was Heidi Fleiss and her 25 Macaws in her double wide in the middle of the desert.

I remember telling friends about my love for my greys, and them joking with me about becoming “that crazy bird guy” and I had to hear every reason why they didn’t like birds. I even had to endure those horror stories about being attacked as children, and let me tell you, that was a real treat. I mean come on, you don’t hear about my fear of snakes and lizards every time I see one, nor of my fear of clowns.

I think it is important to respect people’s taste, and what they are “in to”.  I was wearing my “Got African Grey” shirt last week, and three people complimented me in one day, I had to smile,  it was a little affirmation that maybe I was not the only one out there.  I have a subscription to Bird Talk Magazine, and have been reading it for the past twenty or so years, it’s like my Better Homes and Gardens, Popular Mechanics or Vogue.  I also get excited every month when it comes in the mail, yes that it correct,  I have even been known to post something on Facebook  about it being Bird Talk day.

I also think that it’s important to get to know the people around you, and find out what hobbies they are into.  I have a friend that does model airplanes, and I think it’s great.  I could not do it, for the shear fact that I lack to coordination to do all the details, and not to mention the lack of patience.  There are a few other friends of mine that are into marathons, I respect the dedication that it takes to be physically trained, and have the mental devotion it takes to complete such a feat.  I just choose to gear my interests, and focus into something that I happen to enjoy very much!

I have met a fair amount of people that have let things take over their lives, including their animals.  I think it is important to not only take care of your animals, but take care of yourself too.  One of my favorite quotes is “put yourself on the list”.  Your animals will appreciate you more if you have a little time away, with time to refocus, and recharge  your batteries.  There is nothing wrong with having a life outside of your every day routine.

Also Parrot people unite!  You never know when there will be the Rise of the Planet of The Parrots movie coming out.
